Dance Instructor Wins Lottery, Pledges Winnings to Build Classrooms in Mali
Souleymane Sana, a dance instructor living in North Carolina, won $100,000 from a scratch-off lottery ticket.
However, his happiness does not come from newfound wealth, but from using his winnings to help school children in his native country of Mali.
Sana has created a non-profit organization to help build classrooms for children in Mali. It is called Kono Gnaga.
Relocating to the United States from Mali, a war-torn country in West Africa, Sana has a strong desire to give back to his hometown.
“I’m going to keep doing my best to help build more classrooms for the children in Mali,” he said. “That is the thing that makes me really happy.”
Sana’s motivation for playing the lottery was to help others achieve their dreams, and he hopes that his contribution will make a difference in the lives of the children in Mali.
In addition to building classrooms, Sana dreams of setting up a dance school in Mali to teach children how to dance. He believes that culture and education go hand in hand, and he wants to inspire children to love both.
“I love to dance and I want to teach the children in Mali to love it, too,” he said. “If you talk about culture and you talk about education, they both go together. Some of the money is going to be used to start building a dance center there.”
Scratch-off tickets in the North Carolina lottery fund education to the tune of $2.5 million a day. Sana’s contribution will undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of many children in Mali. His selfless act serves as a reminder that sometimes, the greatest joy comes from helping others.
