Fin Whales Making a Wondrous Comeback in the Southern Ocean!

Great news for ocean giants! A recent study by marine scientists reveals a spectacular recovery of fin whales in the Southern Ocean. These majestic creatures, once heavily impacted by whaling, are thriving once again.

The research, published in a scientific article, showcases a record number of fin whales in the Scotia Sea, a region in the Southwest Atlantic. The estimated population is a staggering 50,000 – more than triple the previous estimates for the entire Southern Ocean! The abundance of fin whales is a positive sign for the Southern Ocean ecosystem. These whales feed on krill, a tiny shrimp-like creature. The study indicates that the fin whale population consumes roughly 20 times more krill than the commercial krill fishing industry in the same area.

Despite this high consumption rate, krill biomass appears stable. Surveys conducted in 2000 and 2019 revealed no significant decline, suggesting a healthy krill population that can support both whales and fisheries.
