Cambodia Makes Huge Strides Towards Eradicating Malaria by 2025

Cambodia is on the cusp of a historic public health achievement: eradicating malaria entirely by 2025. This news comes after a significant decline in malaria cases, with a remarkable 66% drop reported in 2023 compared to the previous year.

"We are incredibly encouraged by this progress," said Siv Sovannaroth, manager of the Malaria Programme at Cambodia's Ministry of Health. "The number of malaria cases, including the most dangerous form, falciparum malaria, has seen a dramatic decrease."

This success is attributed to a multi-pronged approach. Increased access to local treatment has been crucial, with 62% of malaria cases being treated within communities. Additionally, targeted efforts have been directed toward the seven provinces with the highest malaria burden.

Cambodia's progress extends beyond falling case numbers. The country hasn't recorded a single malaria-related death since 2018, a testament to the effectiveness of its malaria control program.

Looking ahead, health officials remain vigilant. Surveillance efforts will continue throughout 2024 to ensure the complete elimination of falciparum malaria. Provinces like Mondulkiri, which has seen a significant drop in cases, are confident they'll achieve eradication by the 2025 target date.

"We are working closely with the Ministry of Health and implementing a comprehensive plan to eliminate malaria," said Bun Sour, director of Mondulkiri's Provincial Health Department. "Public awareness campaigns and increased access to preventative measures like mosquito nets are making a real difference."

Cambodia's success story offers hope for a future free of malaria. Their dedication and innovative strategies serve as an inspiration for other malaria-endemic countries striving to achieve the same goal.
